What Is Software?

The set of instructions given to the computer is called program/software. Program/software are written in programming language. There are two types of programming language.

Ø  High Level Languages

Ø  Low Level Languages

Programming languages are not our topic I will tell you about the types of program/software. There are two types of software.

Ø  System Software

Ø  Application Software

System Software:

System Software is a set of program required to implemented certain functions in a computer system. It controls the operations of a computer system. It also controls the usage and allocation of different hardware components. It enables application program to execute properly.

Examples:

·         Operating System

·         Utility Programs

·         Device Driver

Application Software:

Application Software is used to perform various application on the computer. It helps a computer user to perform specific tasks. It is also known as Application Package. There are two categories of application software.

Ø  Customized Software

Ø  Package Software

Customized Software:

Customized Software is a type of application software that is designed for a particularly customer or organization. It is developed to meet the exact requirements of a particular customer or organization. The cost of customized software is more than packaged software.

Example:

·         College Student Information Database

·         Company Employees Database

·         College Management System

Package Software:

Package Software is also a type of application software that is developed for sale to the general public. It is also known as OFF-THE-SHELF software. It facilitates the people to perform day-to-day activities. Packaged Software is normally developed by the expert programmers.

Example:

·         Microsoft Products

·         Oracle Products

·         Adobe Products

·         Corel Products
